QuasiTrad Tunes Camp
Friday November 1 – Tuesday November 5
Pennyroyal Otways Retreat, Victoria

QuasiTrad welcomes you to a camp that’s all about  tunes – tune-writing and tune-playing.  And who better to help you unlock your  tune-writing  creativity than US composer and fiddler, Liz Carroll.  Liz  set the bar decades ago with her skill in composition in the celtic tradition, and we are extremely excited to be bringing her to Australia for the very first time! Joining her in teaching will be the much-loved Kate Burke; composer, multi-instrumentalist and singer from Trouble in the Kitchen and Kate & Ruth.   And to keep the tunes rolling all weekend, the dynamic  duo,  Pria Schwall-Kearney and Kit Joyce, will be hosting late afternoon and evening  sessions.  Between them, they know enough tunes to play non-stop for years!  Well, nearly…

The weekend starts on Friday evening and ends at midday on  Tuesday after our signature Melbourne-Cup Champagne Brunch to finish.  Each morning will be focused on tune-writing.  After lunch there will be a break, when you can enjoy one of the many walks on the property, take a 20 min drive into Lorne and the Great Ocean Road,  focus on your composing, or succumb to the beautiful surroundings and do nothing!  Then in the late afternoon the sessions will start up, beginning with a  chilled jam (which includes a  G & T or lime & soda on the house!),  then picking  up momentum into the night.

We will be based at a secluded retreat in the gorgeous Otway Ranges. Pennyroyal is 2 hours from Melbourne and 1 hour from Geelong.  There are 3 cottages on site offering a choice of private or shared rooms, or you can choose to camp down by the lake.  All meals are provided, except breakfast – each cottage has its own kitchen where you can store your breakfast ingredients, whether you’re in a room or camping.

See the Accommodation page for more details on the  options.

Please note numbers for this camp are strictly limited, in order to keep the classes small.  Camp places are only confirmed on receipt of payment. Payment plans can be organised on request.  We will try to give you  your first choice of accommodation, but it will depend on availability.

There are some trade & barter discounts available during the weekend.  Offer us a service you think we could do with over the weekend in exchange for a reduced camp fee!  Kitchen hands are always appreciated.  Or think creatively and send us your proposal!  We’ll do our best to schedule all work hours outside of the masterclasses. Email us at camp@quasitrad.com to apply.

Kate Burke, Tune-Writing

Come back in a few days to read all about Kate!

To be immersed for a weekend in Quebecois music and fiddling – taught by one of the foremost exponents of the style -was an unique and extraordinary experience. Pascal Gemme is amazing and a generous teacher, and the camp had such a friendly atmosphere. Thanks Judy, I’ll definitely be back next time!”
– Jess Foot, freelance oboist and fiddler, Melbourne

A heartfelt thankyou for the Quasitrad Quebec Fiddle Weekend. It was incredibly well-organised and artistically brilliant… and what a treat to be fed quality home-cooked food for five days. Thank you for inviting me as a caller for the contra dance. The event was fantastic! I will definitely be encouraging people to attend any future events.”
– Jeanette Mill, dance caller, Canberra.
